Mission Statement
Acknowledging that all people are born with an innate capacity for creative expression and a need for kinesthetic experiences, Elysium Dance Project offers a positive, non-judgmental space in which to explore the movement arts. Our programs are designed around a balance of sound technique and creative exploration, through which we strive to nurture the spirit of wonder and spontanaeity that is instinctual in young children. We aim to create opportunities for people of all ages to access this state of bliss. Elysium's programs promote the strong work ethic required of any discipline, while celebrating innovation and individual creativity, believing these qualities foster critical thinking skills and the development of flexible, independent minds. Through broad movement education, performances and outreach, Elysium endeavors to embrace the commonalities between forms, while also respecting their incredible diversity.

*C & C Dance is a class designed to allow students to experience dance as a limitless creative outlet, offering them a range of styles from jazz, modern and ballet, as well as the individual style of the instructor. The class begins with a warm-up that incorporates techniques universal to all dance forms, with an emphasis on strong ballet skills and the more expansive torso and body isolation work of jazz and modern dance. Increasingly more complex movement sequences will refine skills, build dynamics and promote ease of movement and fluidity. Music ranging from classical to world and contemporary music will be used to improve rhythm, musicality and versatility. Expression & artistry will be explored through improvisation and creating short dances and casual in-studio showings will serve as a vehicle for showing dances by students & faculty.About the Director
Christine Simes founded Elysium Dance Project in 2003 after serving for many years as Assistant Director of Ballet Theatre Workshop in Portsmouth and on faculty at Ballet New England and Arts Rochester. Her career in dance spans over 20 years, during which time she has been active as a performer, educator and choreographer. Christine's early training was with the Seacoast Ballet, NH Contemporary Ballet and the Boston Ballet School. She continued her studies on full scholarship at the University of Utah's prestigious ballet program, as well as attending San Francisco Ballet Summer program, American Dance Festival & The Choreographer’s Project, Utah. Ms. Simes was a member of Ballet West, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Indianapolis Ballet Theatre & modern dance company Dance Kaleidoscope, as well as performing musicals with Civic Repertory Theatre in Indianapolis. She has performed soloist and principal roles in many of the ballet classics, as well as dancing a wide repertoire of neo-classical and modern works by such choreographers as George Balanchine, John Butler, Michael Smuin, Jose Limon, John Neumier and Val Caniporoli. As a choreographer Christine has choreographed and produced several repertory concerts and most recently created and directed a cross between a play and a ballet 'O'Tannenbaum; A re-grooved play on the traditional Nutcracker ballet.' She also collaborated on productions for the Music Hall's 'Family Series' in Portsmouth, NH. Currently she is pursuing studies in movement therapy.
More About Our Programs
The dance and yoga programs at EDP are immersed in classical forms, while also being inspired by contemporary, modern and emerging ideas and approaches. We apply knowledge of body mechanics and a broad spectrum of techniques and styles to intelligently inform our teaching, allowing intuition and personal style to guide us. In an atmosphere of mutual respect between teacher and student, Elysium promotes the discipline of regular practice as a process of refinement unique to each individual. All classes aim to balance strength and flexibility, increase body awareness, refine motor skills and coordination and develop ease of movement. Class sizes are limited, giving the teacher the ability to adapt material to suit individual needs. Healthy body images and self-esteem will be gently encouraged, for we believe that there is no 'wrong' body for dance or yoga and that every person can experience the benefits of these disciplines.
